What is the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)?

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between four organizations – CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) – that helps companies set targets for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. By providing tools and resources, the SBTi helps companies understand the actions they need to take to significantly contribute to the global effort to limit global warming to 1.5°C degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

But the SBTi does more than just provide guidance – it also works with companies to verify that their targets are in line with the latest climate science. This ensures that the targets set by companies are not only ambitious but also achievable and consistent with the overall goal of achieving net zero emissions. By providing this service, the SBTi is helping to drive the transition to a low-carbon economy and a more sustainable future.
