The Plastic Waste Reduction Program (Plastic Program) was established by Verra to issue plastic credits for plastic waste collection and recycling projects.
Minimize your plastic footprint by developing plastic waste collection or recycling projects.
The Plastic Waste Reduction Program (Plastic Program) was established by Verra to issue plastic credits for plastic waste collection and recycling projects.
Plastic projects are divided into two as recyclable plastic and non-recyclable plastic projects. Depending on the project type, Waste Collection Credits (WCCs) and/or Waste Recycling Credits (WRCs) are generated and issued in Verra Registry.
Net Zero® offers businesses the opportunity to develop verified
plastic projects in accordance with the Verra Plastic Standard

Plastic Standard Project: Material and Credit Flow
Plastic projects are key to developing sustainable business models and ensuring a plastic waste-free environment.
Plastic Credits function as an incentive mechanism to minimize plastic waste. They can be purchased and retired by business entities to reduce footprint.
Extended Producer Responsibility is a term that stands for the environmental accountability of producers throughout a product's lifecycle from production stage to waste management.
As part of the Plastic Program, plastic waste is recycled or collected from the environment. The process reduces the footprint of corporate supply chain supporting circular economy.
Each plastic credit represents one tonne of plastic waste that has been collected or recycled. Businesses are equipped with an effective tool to achieve plastic neutrality via projects.
Stages of Plastic Credit Project Development:
Get a Quote
Project Compatibility
Assessment
A preliminary assessment is conducted to determine whether the project meets the environmental and financial requirements of the relevant standard.
Data Collection and
Preparation of Documents
Project description and calculation documents (PDD) are prepared by collecting the necessary information in accordance with the relevant methodology.
Listing the Project in the Applicable Standard
Within the scope of the standard requirements, relevant documents are presented.
Approval and Validation
The prepared documents are approved and validated by the standard. Necessary technical support is provided throughout the process.
Registration of Plastic Credits
Plastic credits are issued and registered in Verra Registry after the completion of the validation process.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What are plastic credits?
A Plastic Credit represents one metric tonne of plastic waste recycled or collected. Under Verra’s Plastic Program two types of credits are issued: Waste Collection Credits (WCCs) and Waste Recycling Credits (WRCs), which are retired by users to reduce plastic footprint.
How are plastic credits generated?
Plastic Credits are generated via Verra-verified plastic projects. Plastic Credit issuance is based on: a) the volume of plastic collected, b) the volume of plastic recycled above baseline rates (i.e., the reference point specifying what would occur in the absence of the project). Each credit is associated with a unique serial number and issued in Verra Registry.
What are plastic credit types?
Plastic projects are issued Waste Collection Credits (WCCs) and/or Waste Recycling Credits (WRCs) depending on the type of plastic collected. Plastic waste is collected from the environment and sorted by type. Recyclable plastic is delivered to recycling facilities to be recycled, generating both Waste Collection and Waste Recycling Credits. Non-recyclable plastic is deposited in landfill and generate only Waste Collection Credits.
Are plastics credits verified and credible?
Verra's Plastic Program ensures that Plastic Credits are measurable, independently verified by third-party bodies, uniquely associated with a serial number, and transparently listed. Qualified validation process is carried out via independent Validation Verification Bodies (VVB). VVBs audit plastic projects to ensure integrity and project quality.
