What happened

Türkiye launched a COP31 promotional campaign in New York alongside the 81st United Nations General Assembly and New York Climate Week. In Times Square, artist Garip Ay used the traditional marbling technique to create the COP31 logo.

Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum, who is also COP31 president, visited the site. The campaign also used LED-equipped vehicles carrying COP31 material on New York streets. Further three-dimensional displays, interactive information points and experience areas were installed at Turkish House and Glasshouse.

Why it matters

Türkiye is using the UN gathering to present its role as host and president of the 31st Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The ministry said it wants COP31 to focus on delivery rather than targets alone, including improved access to technology, knowledge and finance for developing countries.

The announcement sets out Türkiye’s priorities for the COP31 process, but does not specify new corporate requirements, funding arrangements or application procedures.

Background

COP31 is the 31st meeting of parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The ministry described the New York activity as part of its international campaign to introduce Türkiye and its COP31 agenda.

What's next

The ministry said it intends to extend COP31 promotion across the United States during the UN-related events. It aims to use the campaign to build support for a COP process that produces decisions on access to technology, information and finance.
