What happened

Türkiye’s Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change has announced the installation of the Konya Tropical Butterfly Garden at the COP31 site in Antalya. Selçuklu Municipality created the attraction as preparations for the summit approach completion.

The garden extends across 2,600 square metres and contains 20,000 butterflies spanning 10 species, according to the ministry. It has been placed in the summit’s 527,000-square-metre Blue Zone, the diplomatic area intended for climate negotiations.

The ministry expects delegations from countries and nearly 100,000 visitors in the Blue Zone. COP31 is scheduled to be held in Antalya from 9 to 20 November, with Türkiye hosting and the ministry coordinating preparations.

Specialist biologist Pınar Öge said the butterflies originate from tropical countries including the Philippines, Kenya, Costa Rica and Panama. The exhibit is intended to explain the role and importance of butterflies in nature to visitors.

Why it matters

The installation adds a nature-focused visitor feature to the physical setting for COP31 negotiations. It is an element of summit-site preparation, rather than a policy announcement, regulatory requirement or climate-finance measure.

For delegates, observers and organisations planning to attend associated activities, the announcement provides a further indication of the facilities being prepared within the Blue Zone. The ministry’s visitor estimate also underlines the anticipated scale of activity at the diplomatic venue during the conference.

The garden’s stated educational focus places biodiversity alongside the climate agenda that will be discussed at the summit. However, the ministry’s announcement does not set out any additional conservation commitments, biodiversity targets or operational requirements connected with the exhibit.

What to do next

Organisations attending COP31 can monitor official venue information as the summit approaches and incorporate the Blue Zone’s visitor facilities into on-site planning where relevant. The ministry has said that event preparations are in their final stages.
