What happened
Türkiye’s Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change has imposed a TL5.034 million administrative penalty on the Yalova Provincial Local Administrations Solid Waste Facilities Construction and Operation Union, or YAKAB.
The action concerns pollution linked to the Yalova sanitary landfill at Denizçalı village in Çiftlikköy district. According to the ministry, untreated leachate from the site reached the Marmara Sea after entering a nearby stream.
The ministry’s Yalova provincial teams began an inspection after receiving a report of contaminated water flowing to the sea through the stream between the Ro-Ro Port and Dantel Site. Their assessment found that a blockage in an existing line had caused the untreated liquid to be released into the watercourse.
The ministry said the affected location falls inside a Special Environmental Protection Area. It identified YAKAB as the body subject to the administrative sanction.
Why it matters
The case puts attention on a critical landfill-control point: the collection, conveyance and treatment of leachate. In this instance, the ministry linked a blockage in the site’s existing line to a discharge that travelled beyond the facility boundary, through a stream and into coastal waters.
For waste operators, the enforcement action is a prompt to review whether leachate lines can be monitored, maintained and rapidly isolated when flows are disrupted. Operators should also check escalation procedures for reports of off-site water pollution and verify that treatment arrangements continue to function during line failures.
The protected status of the affected area was explicitly cited by the ministry. Organisations operating close to waterways or protected coastal areas should ensure that their operational controls, inspection records and incident-response arrangements address the route by which any release could reach receiving waters.
What to watch
The ministry’s announcement sets out the fine, the inspection finding and the identified cause of the release. It does not describe further remedial measures, compliance deadlines or additional enforcement steps. The published notice is available from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change.
