What happened
Türkiye’s Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change Ministry has amended the regulation governing environmental management services.
The revision requires environmental consultancy companies to hold a Bureau Registration Certificate, known as BTB. The certificate is issued by the Chamber of Environmental Engineers within the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects.
The ministry said the condition brings consultancy firms into line with companies holding Environmental Impact Assessment competence certification. The amendment also creates scope for administrative monetary penalties when a consultancy does not begin the application process intended to resolve non-compliance identified at an operating site.
Why it matters
The change adds a formal registration requirement for environmental consultancies working in Türkiye. Firms should confirm that they have obtained the required BTB from the relevant chamber and review internal procedures for responding when an operator’s non-compliance is identified.
In particular, consultancies should ensure they initiate the applicable remediation application process rather than leaving identified issues unresolved. The ministry’s amendment allows administrative fines in cases where that process is not started.
What consultancies should do
- Verify whether the firm holds the required Bureau Registration Certificate.
- Review how identified operational non-compliance is recorded and escalated.
- Ensure responsible staff can begin the relevant corrective application process.
