What happened
Türkiye has published a National Disaster Waste Management Guide for municipalities preparing or strengthening local plans for waste arising from disasters.
The guide was prepared under the project to build local capacity for disaster-risk reduction and waste management. The Union of Municipalities of Türkiye worked with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with support from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change.
Its coverage includes the definition and categories of disaster waste, coordination arrangements and actions before, during and after a disaster. It also addresses methods for forecasting waste quantities, equipment and administrative requirements, and the selection and operation of temporary disposal areas.
Further sections cover waste-treatment options, communications planning, training and awareness activities.
Why it matters
For Turkish municipalities, the document provides a common reference point for organising waste operations before an emergency occurs. This is relevant to local authorities and the organisations that support municipal waste services, particularly where temporary handling capacity and operational planning are needed after a disaster.
The project behind the guide aims to reduce the effects of disaster waste on public health and the environment, support response and recovery work, and direct recoverable materials towards circular-economy uses.
