What happened
France experienced its warmest summer since records began in 1900, according to the country’s June-to-August 2026 climate assessment. The national meteorological service reported 53 days on which heatwave thresholds were met during the season.
The extreme conditions extended beyond high temperatures. Environment Minister Monique Barbut said drought and wildfires also affected the country, with fire damage by the end of August covering six times the average area of the preceding 20 years. Health Minister Stephanie Rist said that, by the end of July, more than 7,000 deaths had been recorded during the heat episodes; final data were still to follow.
For cultural institutions, the operational response included altered opening times and early closures. EkoIQ, reporting information published by Le Monde, said these measures reduced visits and led to ticket reimbursements.

The season shows how acute heat can translate into immediate disruption for visitor-economy assets. Restrictions on opening hours affected admissions, while advance bookings that did not proceed created a further revenue exposure beyond the cost of refunds.
The Centre des Monuments Nationaux, which oversees state-owned historic properties, returned €525,000 in ticket payments after earlier closures. Its director general, Kevin Riffault, said lost reservations represented the larger revenue issue. Attendance across the organisation’s sites fell by more than 7%.
Individual venues reported sizeable impacts. Versailles closed early on 11 occasions and recorded a 33% decline in visitor numbers during the hottest periods, alongside €260,000 in lost revenue. The Louvre also closed early 11 times across June and July, refunding 60,000 tickets at a cost of €1 million. The Musée d’Orsay refunded €70,000 and the Musée de l’Orangerie €60,000.
