Solar accounts for 22% of Türkiye’s installed power capacity

What happened

Türkiye’s installed electricity capacity reached 126,944 MW by the close of August 2026, according to Enerji Günlüğü. Renewable energy sources contributed 79,902 MW, equivalent to 62.9% of the national total.

Solar capacity was reported at 27,914 MW, representing 22% of installed power capacity. Wind capacity reached 15,434 MW, or 12.2% of the total. Taken together, the two technologies amounted to 43,348 MW and accounted for 34.2% of capacity.

Sources categorised as domestic supplied 72.1% of Türkiye’s installed capacity. The figures describe the capacity mix at the end of August rather than electricity generation by each technology.

Why it matters

The update puts solar at more than one-fifth of Türkiye’s power-capacity base and shows renewables approaching two-thirds of the installed fleet. Solar and wind alone now represent more than one-third of the total, making their deployment central to changes in the country’s capacity mix.

The reported 72.1% share for domestic sources also gives context to the government’s emphasis on locally available energy resources. For energy-market participants, the end-August data provide a reference point for tracking subsequent changes in solar, wind and total renewable capacity.

Installed capacity does not indicate how much electricity each source produced over the period. The figures should therefore be read as a measure of available generating capacity, alongside rather than in place of generation data.

What to watch

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said Türkiye would keep expanding renewable-energy investment, with particular focus on solar and wind. He linked the approach to strengthening energy-supply security and advancing the country’s 2053 net-zero emissions objective.

Bayraktar also said Türkiye would set out its vision and concrete targets in this area through the COP31 process. Future announcements on those targets and on additional solar and wind deployment will be relevant for assessing whether the installed-capacity mix continues to shift at a similar pace.
