What happened

Türkiye’s Green Hydrogen Producers Association (H2DER) and Germany’s H2Global Foundation have signed a memorandum of understanding focused on green hydrogen.

The arrangement is intended to advance green hydrogen output in Türkiye and its placement in European markets. It also provides for the organisations to identify specific areas for cooperation, deepen Turkish-German energy ties and build their working relationship.

For developers, suppliers and prospective buyers, the immediate change is a formal channel between the two organisations around Turkish production and European demand. Companies considering activity in this area should monitor whether the memorandum produces defined projects, procurement routes or commercial partnerships.

H2DER president Yusuf Günay and H2Global Foundation executive director Markus Exenberger signed the memorandum at an Istanbul event on the hydrogen economy. Germany’s Consulate General in Istanbul organised the event, according to Enerji Günlüğü.

Why it matters

The memorandum links Türkiye’s potential green hydrogen production with the European market, an important consideration for companies assessing supply options, infrastructure needs and cross-border commercial relationships.

Günay said Türkiye has advantages for commercial-scale production, citing renewable resources, industrial infrastructure and proximity to European markets. He described the cooperation as an opportunity to connect production potential with investment, technology, market demand and international trade.

Exenberger pointed to Türkiye’s resources, infrastructure and human capital, as well as its proximity to Europe, Asia and Africa. He said these factors position the country favourably for development of clean hydrogen as a commodity and for the creation of a new market.

The agreement itself does not disclose hydrogen volumes, investment amounts, offtake commitments, project locations or a timetable. Its significance therefore rests on the parties’ stated intention to turn the cooperation framework into practical opportunities rather than on any announced supply deal.

What to watch next

Market participants can look for follow-up announcements on the concrete collaboration areas envisaged by H2DER and H2Global Foundation. Relevant signals would include named projects, investment or technology partners, arrangements for bringing output to European customers, and any further detail on demand or trade links.

The memorandum was signed in the context of discussion on hydrogen’s foundations, opportunities and challenges in Türkiye. Whether it leads to commercial activity will depend on the subsequent initiatives announced by the two organisations.
