What happened

Montréal Olympic Park has added Espace Solaire, a permanent outdoor area designed by Aire Commune that uses solar power for its on-site electrical needs. According to Ekoyapı Dergisi, it is Québec’s first outdoor public space run entirely on solar energy and has been accessible since summer 2026.

The scheme combines photovoltaic structures with batteries and smart energy management. The panels serve a dual purpose: they generate electricity and create shaded areas for visitors. The site also includes integrated seating, landscaping, lighting, electrical outlets, outdoor work points and free high-speed Wi-Fi.

Sunbird Énergie developed the energy system in collaboration with Aire Commune. Electricity from the solar array is held in batteries as direct current, then an inverter converts it to alternating current for equipment including lighting and sockets. Excess daytime output can be retained to support operation later in the day. The system is not linked to the electricity grid.

Why it matters

Espace Solaire places power infrastructure in plain view rather than treating it solely as back-of-house equipment. Its solar canopies combine a public-amenity function with electricity generation, making the relationship between the structure above users and the power available at the site easier to read.

For teams planning parks, plazas and outdoor work settings, the project brings generation, storage and use together at a small urban scale. It shows how photovoltaic equipment can be considered alongside shade, furniture, planting and lighting during public-space design.

The project also expands the role of an outdoor civic setting beyond rest and gathering. Visitors can work outdoors, charge devices and use digital connectivity while drawing on an energy system produced at the location.

Location and operation

Espace Solaire sits near the Olympic Tower and behind the Biodôme at Montréal Olympic Park. The park, originally developed for the 1976 Summer Olympics, now operates year-round as both an urban park and a sports and events complex.

The installation’s battery capacity is intended to extend use beyond periods when the panels are producing directly, including later in the day. Its performance therefore depends on the combined operation of solar generation, storage and control systems rather than generation alone.

What to watch

Practitioners can assess how the site functions across changing weather and daily demand, particularly the balance between charging, lighting and other visitor uses. The project provides a built example of an off-grid public amenity where solar infrastructure is also part of the architectural and landscape experience.
