What happened
Osmangazi Electricity Distribution (OEDAŞ) has received recognition at the 2026 International Green Apple Environment Awards for its carbon-management project, centred on a regional electricity-grid emissions-factor methodology.
The method was developed for OEDAŞ's distribution territory in Afyonkarahisar, Bilecik, Eskişehir, Kütahya and Uşak. It is designed to calculate an emissions factor for electricity in that service area, rather than relying solely on a broader geographic measure.
According to information published by SKD Türkiye, independent organisations verified the methodology. OEDAŞ then incorporated the resulting factor into its calculation of 2025 Scope 2 emissions.
For sustainability and carbon-accounting teams, the immediate point is that OEDAŞ has put a locally defined, independently verified input into use for its own Scope 2 assessment. Organisations operating in the five provinces should monitor whether and how the underlying regional data becomes available for their reporting processes.
Why it matters
OEDAŞ uses the data from the methodology to evaluate the environmental effects of grid investments, energy-efficiency work and measures intended to reduce electricity losses. The company also intends to use the information over the longer term to identify activities that could make the largest contribution to emissions reductions.
The project may also create a regional data resource for industrial organisations in OEDAŞ's service territory to draw on when preparing carbon reports. The evidence does not specify the terms of access or how companies would apply the data, but the potential use is relevant to businesses seeking geographically specific inputs for emissions accounting.
The project reflects the importance of defining and documenting calculation methods where companies are using emissions data to compare operational interventions. Independent verification provides an additional check on the methodology used by OEDAŞ.
What's next
The awards will be presented at a ceremony in London on 23 November, when the level of OEDAŞ's award will be announced. The International Green Apple Environment Awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent non-profit body.
More than 700 submissions from around the world were made to the competition. OEDAŞ has said it aims to share the knowledge and experience developed through the project with its sector.
