What happened

Türkiye’s licensed power stations produced 30.231 million MWh in July 2026, representing an 8.4% year-on-year decrease, according to the Electricity Market Regulatory Authority’s (EPDK) July sector report, as reported by Enerji Günlüğü. Licensed output had been about 33 million MWh in the corresponding month a year earlier.

Hydroelectric facilities were the leading source, supplying 29.99% of generation from licensed assets. Plants using imported coal accounted for 21.56%, followed by wind at 13.62%, lignite-fired stations at 12.58% and natural gas at 11.45%.

Solar contributed 3.86% of licensed generation. Geothermal and biomass supplied 2.58% and 2.43%, respectively.

Why it matters

The lower monthly output occurred while licensed installed capacity expanded. Capacity reached 101,029 MW in July, up 3.22% from 97,873 MW at the end of July in the previous year. The data therefore distinguish between growth in the licensed fleet and electricity generated during the month.

For generators, buyers and analysts, the figures provide a current view of how hydro, coal, wind and gas featured in licensed supply. They should compare subsequent monthly source shares and output with capacity changes when assessing market conditions; the reported data do not identify the reason for the year-on-year production decline.

Unlicensed generation and support scheme data

Gross electricity production from unlicensed facilities was 3.844 million MWh in July. Of that volume, 2.868 million MWh was surplus generation purchased.

Unlicensed installed capacity stood at 25,446 MW, of which solar represented 96.68%. Separately, generation covered by Türkiye’s Renewable Energy Support Mechanism, known as YEKDEM, totalled 8.4 million MWh during the month.

What to watch

Market participants can use the next EPDK sector reports to track whether licensed output recovers, and whether the relative contributions of hydroelectricity, wind, coal and gas shift. Changes in solar’s share of licensed generation and in unlicensed capacity are also relevant to the evolving supply mix.
