What happened
Yara International has inaugurated a carbon capture and storage facility at its Sluiskil site in Zeeland, the Netherlands. Turkish energy publication Enerji Günlüğü reported that the Norwegian fertiliser producer formally opened the installation on 7 September 2026.
The facility is intended to capture and liquefy as much as 800,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide each year from ammonia production. Yara Sluiskil is among Europe’s largest ammonia and fertiliser manufacturing locations, and the project focuses on emissions from that process.
Enerji Günlüğü described the project as Europe’s largest industrial carbon-capture installation. At its planned annual capacity, the captured volume would equal about 0.5% of the Netherlands’ annual emissions, according to the publication.
The company’s stated objective is to remove approximately 12 million tonnes of CO2 from the site across 15 years. Captured gas is to be handled by a transport and storage operator, then stored in geological formations beneath the seabed on Norway’s continental shelf, at a depth of 2.6 kilometres.
For sustainability and industrial decarbonisation teams, the immediate point to assess is the cross-border capture, transport and storage model used for unavoidable process emissions.
Why it matters
Ammonia production is an emissions-intensive chemical process for which lower-carbon alternatives may not yet be available at scale. The Sluiskil project therefore provides an example of how carbon capture can be applied while existing ammonia and fertiliser output continues.
Yara has said the investment is intended to support its lower-carbon fertiliser and ammonia offering, marketed as Yara Climate Choice, and to reduce its exposure to carbon taxes. Enerji Günlüğü cited an investment figure of about €200 million, while noting that this amount was reported by some sources.
The development also aligns with the European Union’s view that carbon-capture technologies can contribute to its 2050 net-zero objective, particularly in industrial activities such as chemical manufacturing where alternatives remain limited.
What’s next
From 2026, the facility is expected to begin capturing and liquefying CO2 at volumes of up to 800,000 tonnes a year. Its performance will depend not only on capture operations at Sluiskil, but also on the availability and delivery of the transport-and-storage route to offshore Norwegian storage.
