Türkiye’s 2027–2029 Medium-Term Programme includes a specific objective to increase electricity-storage capacity, according to the Energy Storage Industries Association (EDEDER).

EDEDER described the provision as a significant indication that storage will form part of the country’s energy-policy agenda in the period ahead. The association’s chair, Doğa Can Bayram, said the rapid expansion of renewable capacity means the focus must include how that generation is incorporated into the energy system, rather than concentrating only on new installations.

For sustainability and energy-market professionals, the immediate point is that storage has been identified in the programme alongside renewable integration and system security. EDEDER’s position is that implementation measures, particularly market arrangements, will determine whether the objective translates into faster investment.

Why it matters

EDEDER argues that storage infrastructure enables clean electricity to be used when it is needed, while making the grid more flexible and resilient. It also says storage helps make renewable output more manageable and contributes to security of supply.

The association’s vice-chair, Ramazan Kaya, said a capacity increase should be underpinned by a durable market structure. EDEDER wants a regulated, competitive and effective framework in which the services delivered by storage are properly specified and receive economic compensation.

Such a framework, EDEDER said, could support more rapid investment and the development of a lasting domestic storage ecosystem. These are the association’s views rather than details of confirmed implementing rules in the programme.

What to watch next

Attention will turn to the measures used to deliver the programme objective during 2027–2029, including whether storage services are defined and valued through market design.

EDEDER also noted the programme’s emphasis on strengthening domestic manufacturing and research and development in energy technologies. Kaya said Türkiye has potential to develop and produce storage technology, as well as export it to surrounding geographies.

Renewable developers, grid stakeholders and storage suppliers should therefore monitor subsequent policy and market-design steps associated with the programme’s storage objective.
