TENMAK and Copenhagen Atomics, a Danish reactor developer, have signed a memorandum covering work on thorium for advanced nuclear technologies. Türkiye’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar attended the signing, according to a ministry statement reported by the Turkish National Committee of the World Energy Council.

The parties plan research and project-development activity on thorium compounds that could be used in molten-salt reactor technologies. A central question is whether compounds meeting nuclear-fuel standards can be made domestically in Türkiye.

The arrangement also envisages bringing Turkish industrial, technology and research participants into the work. Copenhagen Atomics will examine its modular Onion Core molten-salt reactor concept in relation to Türkiye’s research facilities, workforce and industrial capabilities.

The memorandum connects a reactor technology developer with Türkiye’s interest in deriving greater value from its thorium resources. Bayraktar said that the commercial prospects of competing nuclear technologies would become clearer over the coming years. For now, the agreement is an assessment and development framework, with commercial outcomes still unconfirmed.
