What happened

Türkiye produced 31.254 billion kWh of electricity in September 2026, 5.8% more than in the corresponding month a year earlier. Hydropower was the largest generating source, accounting for 8.235 billion kWh, or 26.34% of the monthly total. Energy buyers and analysts should follow subsequent monthly data to assess whether this source mix persists.

The figures were calculated by Enerji Günlüğü using data from Türkiye’s electricity transmission company, TEİAŞ.

Hydro output takes the lead

Reservoir-based hydroelectric facilities generated 6.982 billion kWh, an annual increase of 175%. Their output alone represented 22.3% of all electricity produced during the month. Plants using river flows added 1.253 billion kWh, bringing total hydroelectric production to 8.235 billion kWh.

Solar plants generated 4.490 billion kWh, rising 20.5% from September 2025. Wind production changed little, increasing 0.3% to 3.800 billion kWh.

Coal remains material while gas output declines

Generation from imported coal was 6.285 billion kWh, down 5.2% year on year. It nevertheless represented 20% of September supply. Domestic-coal generation rose 3% to 3.501 billion kWh, equivalent to an 11.2% share.

Natural-gas-fired plants produced 2.920 billion kWh, compared with 6.530 billion kWh in September 2025. The source also reported declines in generation from hard coal, asphaltite, fuel oil and geothermal resources, without providing figures in the cited report.

Why it matters

The data show a substantially different monthly generation balance from a year earlier: higher hydroelectric and solar output coincided with much lower gas generation. For organisations assessing Türkiye’s power-market exposure, hydro’s 26.34% contribution made it the leading source in September, while imported coal retained a significant role.

The reported data do not establish effects on electricity prices, emissions, demand or procurement conditions. They are a monthly comparison rather than evidence of a sustained change in the power system.

What to watch next

Future TEİAŞ-based monthly releases will indicate whether hydroelectric output remains elevated and whether gas generation stays below its September 2025 level. They will also show whether solar’s annual growth continues while wind output remains broadly unchanged.
